Founded in 1899, the Tamil Union Cricket and Athletic Club has been in the forefront of Sports Promotion in the Island since then.
Apart from its contribution in providing its hallowed turf the P Sara Oval - the prime reason for the induction of Sri Lanka into Test Cricket - the Club has also produced two of the Nations’s undisputable cricketing champions – the incomparable Mahadevan Sathasivam, acknowledged as the finest batsman the country has ever produced, and the irrepressible and irreplaceable Muttiah Muralidaran, the best bowler the World has ever seen and probably will ever see. By reaching out to the under-privileged schools in the South and Centre of the Island (This process has now been extended to schools in Jaffna too) from the Seventies onwards, the Club has introduced cricketers like Champaka Ramanayake, Pramodaya Wickremasinghe, |
Upul Chandana, Niroshan Bandaratileke, Athula Samarasekera, Indika De Saram, Chandika Hathurusinghe etc to the National Team. Current National Representatives at various levels include Suranga Lakamal, Isuru Udana, Gihan Rupesinghe, Jeevan Mendis, Sachithra Serasinghe and Ashan Priyanjan.
The Club is presently on a re-development phase under a dynamic Management Committee and CEO. We invite you to come over and check out the plethora of facilities on offer to Members – tennis, squash, badminton, walking, private function bookings, the Oval Taverners Pub, the swimming pool and the state-of-the-art Gym with our own Personal Trainer to help you achieve your physical goals. Membership rates are attractive and a number of options are available. The Club is open to all Sri Lankan and Foreign Residents. |

There were three “Club Night” events organised by the Bar & Reception Committee during the year; The AGM dinner in July, lighting of the Christmas Tree in December and The Oval Taverners Champions Night in January.

Our kitchen “THE CUISINE”, which is run by Supreme Caterers and opens for orders on a daily basis, continues to be a firm favourite with patrons. The quality of food and service and competitive pricing has been the hallmark of this continuing success. They also cater for private functions of members within the Club premises and also outside.
